Easter Is No Longer Just a Long Weekend

Easter in Guyana has always carried meaning. It begins with faith and reflection, church services, fasting during the Lenten season, the quietness of Good Friday, and the familiarity of hot cross buns shared at home.

Over time, Easter has grown into more than a solemn observance.

Today, Easter moves across the country as it stretches beyond a single place or moment. Some travel to Lethem for the rodeo. Others head to Bartica for the Regatta and boat races. Families gather at the parks for picnics, bush cooks or line the seawalls on Easter Monday with kites cutting across the sky.

Easter is no longer spent in one place. It unfolds through movement, planning and togetherness. What has changed just as much is how those moments travel.

Photos are shared before the day is done. Videos from the rodeo circulate while the dust is still in the air. Clips from the regatta move from one screen to the next.

A simple message,  “reach safe?” becomes part of the rhythm of the weekend. The experience no longer ends where you are. It continues, carried through everything you share, watch and send. Easter is still rooted in tradition but it now lives across more than one place at a time. It is physical and digital, immediate and ongoing.

Easter is no longer just about the holiday. It is not only something you attend. It is something you stay connected to. It’s about how we come together, wherever we are.
